EVENT REVIEW - On Sunday afternoon (7th December), those of us who had been able to reserve tickets at Paradiso were present at an unusual performance of music played by Jeremy Capey. Members of the audience were completely spellbound as Jeremy played a creative and interesting performance.
Jeremy is the principal cellist in the Lyric Chamber Orchestra, a small string group made up of professional and semi-professional musicians, who since 2022 have played in many of Devon’s churches, village halls and occasionally larger halls with audiences of up to 350. He says, about Lyric, that he has ‘been provided with opportunities to play music at the highest level within my local community’.
Paradiso provided an opportunity for him to create a different programme. His solo performance consisted of shortish pieces of music from a wide-ranging repertoire. Of course, as a solo cellist, he played Preludes from Bach’s Six Suites for unaccompanied cellists. Interwoven between familiar names were those of many composers who have written in periods from early in the 17th century in Italy; others in England, Germany, Ireland or America wrote in the 19th century until the present day. Some, such as Daniel Delaney who calls himself a multi-style cellist included jazz; some wrote folk music, others wrote for films and operas. Many of the listeners would have heard of Malcolm Arnold, a prolific composer and conductor whose compositions were included.
This was a concert of about an hour, with a few questions from the audience at the end. It was a great success and we hope to see him (and of course Lyric Chamber Orchestra) playing again.
Newcomers to Paradiso were able to view the large concert hall which has been built behind the present building on Fore Street but is not yet finished. The ticket revenue will contribute towards Paradiso’s fundraising activities
ORIGANAL ADVERT - The recital, based around the Preludes from four of Bach’s wonderful cello suites, features an eclectic mix of music spanning the centuries. 17th century composers Domenico Gabrielli and Joseph Dall’Abaco feature as composers from the Baroque era, with Malcolm Arnold and Hans Gal, both notable composers, writing for solo cello during 20th century. More contemporary pieces feature Irish folk and American jazz influences and, just slipped in for fun, an arrangement of the beautiful lyrical melody, ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’.
Jez will introduce and talk briefly about each piece in an informal way and the whole performance lasts around 45 minutes.
